Motorhome hire costs explained

A UK motorhome hire quote is a daily rate plus a handful of conditions. This is what to look for, with the published figures we could source.

The hire itself

There is no standard daily rate: owners and hire firms set their own, and they change with the season. On peer-to-peer sites such as Goboony, owners can set a mileage limit and a fee per extra mile1. Check whether your quote has a daily mileage limit, and the rate above it.

Cleaning

Goboony says most owners set £0 and charge £50 to the deposit if the camper is not returned clean1. Ask whether a cleaning or preparation fee is charged even if you return the van clean.

Insurance excess and deposit

With Goboony Day Insurance there is a £2,500 excess and a £2500 deposit on bookings using Goboony Day Insurance2. The excess is what you pay if there is a claim, unless you buy excess cover. The cover has limits: Goboony Day Insurance covers motorhomes up to 3500 kg, trips up to 28 days, starting and ending in the UK2.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How many miles a day are included, and what is the charge per extra mile?
  • What is the insurance excess, the deposit, and when is it refunded?
  • Does the vehicle meet ULEZ and Clean Air Zone standards?
  • Can it go abroad, and is breakdown cover included?
  • What weight is it? Over three and a half tonnes needs a different licence category.

Work out your own trip: open the motorhome hire calculator. It starts with sourced defaults and leaves the rest for your quote.
